I am fighting all of my addictions at once today! Cant wait to talk about them tomorrow!
56 - thats how many hours I worked this week on my "job that pays the bills". Today is a 15 hour day that started at 5:00am and wont end till 9:00pm counting travel. I am absolutely exhausted - BUT...
I am FIRED up about Sunday and Prison Break. I am going to openly confess some minor habits addictions that I have - and one thats pretty serious. Yes - I have a serious addiction. It keeps me up and night, wakes me up in the morning, costs me considerable amounts of money, and time - and I do crazy things to keep feeding it.
Curious? Come Sunday and find out what it is that your pastor is addicted to - and learn to break free from your addictions!
We've probably all seen the reports about government overspending on things like $700.00 hammers, $200.00 toilet seats and the like. I think I found part of the reason for this. I work for a Government Contractor and today we had to move some computer equipment into a new server room they built. Between runs from the storage location to the computer room, which is long and empty right now - my co-worker found a way to have a little fun. This might explain why stuff costs a little more for the government than it does at home depot. There is some "overhead" involved in the delivery
So apparently the motion picture studio is the tail that wags the theater dog. Our theater has mandatory showtimes for Chronicles of Narnia starting at 9:15 Sunday morning. They will also have a 9:45 show along with early showtimes for 21 and Horton Hears a who.
So we are jacked up in the lobby and our kids ministry which meets in the hallways and one of the theaters they'll show Narnia in. We dont mind working around the theater's business - after all we are their guests. But its really dumb because the people most likely to see Chronicles of Narnia are Christian families. Guess where they are on Sunday Morning? In Church! We will have more people in the theater in church Sunday than they will have for the combined showing of all the morning movies.
Here's why it's dumb. If what usually happens when they do this holds true - they will have about 10 people MAX at all the shows. So for a matinée price they rake in a total of $65.00 in ticket sales. Add to that 10 popcorn's and drinks (who eats popcorn at 9:15 in the morning?) - lets say they rake in another $100.00 in concessions. It takes a manager and 4 people to run the place. At $7.00 per hour average wage for the extra 4 hours they have to be there the labor cost is $140.00. Assuming they net $1.00 per ticket which is unlikely they lose $30.00 to be open for the early shows.
Somewhere a bean counter failed to count the fact that showing movies in a small town in the bible belt on Sunday is not good business. We still have blue laws that keep retail stores closed (really its just tradition these days) so people are not accustom to movies starting at 9 in the morning.
But Crosspoint will be showing at 10 in the biggest auditorium - and we'll be moving the kids around and changing our lobby experience - but church will go on and it will be AWESOME so dont miss it!
One of my dreams for Crosspoint is to help plant a church. I cant tell you how badly I want to be part of this. We have some some very small things to help other churches - but come June we have an opportunity that jacks me up!
As part of One Prayer, we will join with other churches to be part of planting not 1, not 10, not 100...But 500! (YES FIVE ZERO ZERO) churches! Imagine the impact of 500 new churches! You can read more about this initiative on Tim Steven's blog and the One Prayer Mission site. Over 800 churches have now joined OnePrayer. If you go to Crosspoint I seriously want to ask you to start praying and fasting and asking God how YOU can participate in this amazing mission initiative revolution!
Sunday I am going to try and help us break free from addictions. It wont be easy because I have some addictions of my own. Stay tuned this week as I confess some of my addictions (blogging not included). Here is a rerun of one of my favorite videos illustrating my addiction to....
I saw this car the other day in a parking lot at Home Depot or something.
I thought good grief - what a pig! It made me think about all the junk people carry around with them. The past that hurts, the unforgiveness that messes up relationships, the addictions that keep them from being what God wants them to be. We all have some junk - and its not all in the trunk. Some of is right where everyone can see it.
I also thought about something else. This car is pretty bad - but if you got in my car or truck you might think - what a pig! I have my own junk I carry around - past hurts, unforgiveness, addictions...excess baggage. My junk just may be hidden better because of years in the ministry. Its easy to look at this car and think mine is OK - but is it? What junk do I have that I need to clean out as I am on this Journey with Christ? What junk do you need to get rid of?
